Description

GUSTAVO VILLEGAS

Mexico City, 1976

Artist who has dedicated his career to expanding the plastic limits of realistic painting. He builds the basis of his work on an aesthetic of destruction. He uses the car as the main element, a symbol of beauty, speed and well-being. However, it also hides the seed of destruction, the predictable and avoidable tragedy.

He studied a degree in Graphic Design at the Universidad del Valle de México and Painting at the Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro. His work has been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions, both in different states of Mexico and in India, Canada, Sweden, Switzerland and New York. He was a member of the National Creators System (2013-2015), a fellow of the Young Creators Program of FONCA (2010-2011) and of the Program of Incentives for Creation by the Queretano Institute for Culture and the Arts (2012-2013). He has also been chosen to participate in international artistic residencies: 'Millay Colony for the Arts Residency Program in New York, USA (2014),' The Why Not Place ', Religare Art Residency Program in New Delhi, India (2011), Djerassi Resident Artists Program in California, United States (2010) and Banff-FONCA Artistic Residence, Banff Center in Alberta, Canada (2008).

Throughout his career, he has received various incentives and recognitions, both national and international. His work received the José-Tomás Chávez Morado Center-West Painting Prize (2016), the “Public Prize” within the XI Monterrey FEMSA Biennial (2014), received an honorable mention at the Miradas Biennial in Tijuana BC within the category Guest Artists (2014), the Acquisition Award at the Monterrey Emerging Art Biennial (2008) and First Place at the Julio Castillo National Biennial in the city of Querétaro (2008). Likewise, his work was selected to participate in "Mexico: The Future is Unwritten, Contemporary Artists from Mexico" of the Luciano Benetton Collection Foundation (2015).
